I killed to avenge friend’s death, says Eiye

A Self-confessed leader of Eiye confraternity in Somolu and Pedro areas of Lagos State made startling revelations, yesterday, on how he butchered two members of Aye, a rival cult group, to avenge the death of a fellow cult member. The suspect, an ex-convict, who has been on the wanted list of Lagos State Police Command, over his alleged involvement in various crimes ranging from robbery and arson, was arrested weekend at Petit Street, Somolu by policemen attached to Alade Division. Parading the 35-year-old suspect, identified as Oriyomi Ibrahim, popularly known as J-Pron, alongside 25 other suspects that have been terrorising the state, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Police Command, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, described his arrest as a major one. Owoseni disclosed that the suspect and members of his group allegedly set a building at Ilepo area of Somolu ablaze, during a recent clash with rival cult group, in which a woman was burnt to death. The father of two admitted to being leader of Eiye, saying, “I am only responsible for the death of Femi Wipe and Akon, who were members of Aye. I stabbed both of them to death in separate fights, because they killed our members first.” … Police crack kidnap threat syndicate Also yesterday, Police paraded two sisters, who belong to a syndicate that specialized in sending kidnap threat messages to prominent Nigerians and demanding for money. The syndicate that sends out kidnap messages to prominent Nigerians usually targets medical doctors within Lagos and Oyo states. They send text messages to their victims, informing them that they have been paid to kidnap them. They would thereafter, demand for money which would be paid into a bank account in the eastern part of the country. Report gathered that over 20 medical doctors have been defrauded through that means. When approached, the elder among them gave her name as Ossai Emmanuella, while the younger is Rita Ojobo. She disclosed that N200,000 was paid into her sister’s account, while she only received an alert of N40,000, adding that her brother was the only one who had access to the account. According to her, “we are not fraudsters. My brother sells machine parts in Togo and he has an apprentice. “His apprentice called to say that he would like his customers who bought machine from him to pay into our account and that my brother would later withdraw the money and pay him.”

Police discover graves in a house of prophet who chained 28 persons

—The Lagos State Police Command, yesterday, uncovered shallow graves allegedly used by prophet Emmanuel Adeyemi to bury clients, who died during spiritual cleansing in his Oke-Ira, Ogba home. The 13 children and 15 adults The 13 children and 15 adults chain 1 Some of the victims Recall that Adeyemi was arrested, weekend, by policemen attached to Area ‘G’ Command, Ogba, following the discovery of 28 chained persons, among them 13 children and 15 adults. This is just as one of those chained was discovered to be a cancer patient, contrary to claims by the suspect that they were all mentally deranged. At press time yesterday, the cancer patient (names withheld) was still undergoing treatment at the hospital from sores sustained in her two legs where she was chained, while others were at the Lagos State rehabilitation centre. Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Police Command, Fatai Owoseni, who made the disclosure, said: “We had another tip-off that there were people he (suspect) buried in his compound and he confirmed it during interrogation. “Because the area is swampy, the suspect allegedly buried some people in the swamp and about three others in the house.” ‘I am a herbalist, not prophet’ However, during interrogation, the suspect maintained that he was a herbalist, saying there was no time he identified himself as a prophet. He said: “I am a herbalist and not a prophet. One of those chained is my step-son; I chained him and locked him inside the room because I wanted to cure him of stealing. Others are people I was treating of madness.” Asked what the shallow graves were for, he replied, “I bury patients who died in the process of receiving treatment. Some of them were brought very sick from the hospital for treatment. “At times, some would be healed while others won’t make it. They were buried with the consent of their relatives.” He further denied claims that he sold human parts to ritualists, saying “I swear, I don’t sell human parts. I am only a traditional healer.” However, Owoseni assured that the police would get to the root of the matter.

No criminal implications in naming dog after person

The incoming Second National Vice President of the Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, Mr. Monday Ubani, yesterday, said that no offence is committed by someone naming his dog after somebody else. He said: “In the eye of the law, it is not criminal for somebody to name his or her dog after another person. It may be offensive by examining the circumstances under which the incident happened. “I understand that a particular dog was named after a neighbour and both of them were not in good terms; in a Hausa community somewhere in the South-West. “So expediency would have prevailed on him not to name his dog after somebody he was quarrelling with. “The Bible says wisdom profited for direction. Anything you are doing must be with wisdom. If such a thing would provoke unnecessary argument, you should avoid it.” Another Lagos-based lawyer, Mr. Tunji Muyedeen, said: “As far as I am concerned, there is no way such offence could be sustained in law. Anybody can name his pet after anybody’s name. “He can even call the pet his name. However, spurious charge or charges may be preferred against such person. “All of us will be living witnesses to the trial of the man. We will see what evidence the prosecution has to prosecute the accused person.” For human rights activist, Mr. Okey Nwaguna, prosecution must show that accused had the intent to cause breach of public peace. He said: “The motive of an accused is never and can never be established by the charge: it must be established by evidence. “Prosecution must show that accused had the intent to cause a breach of public peace. What constitutes ‘public’ is key.”

Igbo Trader Lands self in trouble for Naming His Dog 'BUHARI'

STORY BY AUSTINE ITODO. Police Arrest Man For Naming His Dog 'BUHARI' A 30 years old Igbo trader whose name is Joe Fortemose Chinakwe, of No 10, Omikunle Street, Sango-Ota, Ogun State, was reportedly arrested last weekend, after one of his neighbours of Northern extraction complained bitterly that he named his dog after his father, Alhaji Buhari. According to Vanguard, the complainant reported the case at Sango Police Station, last Saturday, after which the trader was arrested and detained. However, it was gathered that efforts by the police to recover the dog, which they intended using as evidence failed following a clever move by the suspect. The trader, said to be trading in female wears at a popular market in Sango, allegedly directed his friends secretly to kill the dog and possibly eat the meat in order to avoid being implicated. It was gathered that consistent appeals by his friends and relations for the police to grant him bail failed as the complainant and his kinsmen reportedly threatened to kill the trader if he was released on bail Trader denied bail The case, however, took a different dimension two days later when Chinakwe’s relatives went to Sango police station to further plead for his bail only to be informed that the case file and the suspect have been transferred to Ogun State Police Command headquarters at Eleweran. A relation to the suspect, who simply identified himself as Chiedozie, told Vanguard that his brother was being persecuted for no just cause and expressed fears that he may either be poisoned inside police cell or thrown into jail. Chiedozie said: “Chinakwe is a lover of dogs and he names them after things that tickle him. He bought this dog a year ago and named it Buhari. Unfortunately, some Northerners, who dominate the vicinity where he resides misconstrued his intention and connived to take him up. The complainant then claimed it was derogatory because his father answers Buhari.” Police sources, however, told Vanguard that the actions of the suspect “were very provocative.” The source said: “he not only named the dog Buhari but boldly wrote it on the body of both sides of the dog and was seen parading the neighborhood dominated by Northerners with it.” As at press time, relations to the suspect were still making frantic efforts to effect his bail while his accusers are insisting that he must be prosecuted. Police confirms arrest When contacted around 8pm yesterday, the acting Police spokesman in Ogun State, Abimbola Oyeyemi, ASP, said he was still trying to get the Divisional Police Officer in-charge of Sango for details. Oyeyemi later called, stating that: “I have made enquiries. The man bought a dog and inscribed Buhari on both sides of its body. One Mallam lodged a complaint and when our men got there, we found out that it was true. You know such thing can cause serious breach of the peace and ethnic or religious unrest. We are charging him to court for conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.” Continuing, he said: “He was arrested last Saturday and we are taking him to court later today (Tuesday) or tomorrow morning (today). You know an average Northerner will feel bad over such a thing. It can cause serious ethnic crisis or religious confrontation because when you are relegating such a name to a certain person, you are indirectly insulting him.” When asked about the whereabouts of the dog that will be used as evidence against the suspect, the police spokesman said: “The dog cannot follow anybody except the owner. We will use him as our evidence because he did not deny it
