BUHARI ENJOINS NNPC TO COMMENCE OIL EXPLORATION IN BENUE TROUGH President Muhammadu Buhari has enjoined the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, to commence the search for crude oil and other hydrocarbon exploratory activities in the Benue Trough. According to a statement by the NNPC, Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Mr. Maikaniti Baru, disclosed this while receiving a delegation from the Benue State Government, who paid him a courtesy visit in Abuja. This is coming few days after the same directive was given to the NNPC to intensify crude oil exploration in the Chad basin. The Benue Trough is a major geological formation underlying a large part of Nigeria, extending about 1,000 kilometer north-east from the Bight of Benin to Lake Chad. It is part of the broader Central African Rift System. Baru stated that the directive to commence exploratory activities in the Benue Trough was part of efforts to guarantee energy security of the country. In addition, the NNPC also stated that it has reinvigorated its collaboration with the Benue State Government on the Ethanol project which is geared towards production of biofuels for energy sufficiency. Baru noted that ethanol when blended with Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, otherwise known as petrol, ensures excellent performance of vehicles, stressing that energy sufficiency and proficiency were part of the cardinal objectives of the NNPC. The NNPC added that it has initiated a renewable energy programme in August 2005 which is in conformity with the Kyoto Protocol agreement to which Nigeria is a signatory. The primary aim of the programme, according to the NNPC, is to link the agricultural sector with the oil and gas industry, adding that it is also targeted at gradually reducing the nation’s dependence on imported gasoline, reducing environmental pollution as a result of consumption of wholesale fossil fuel as well as creating a commercially viable industry that can boast of sustainable domestic jobs. “A similar programme in Brazil has a thriving biofuels industry providing quantum economic benefits including creation of hundreds of thousands of employment opportunities for nationals of that country,” the NNPC noted. Also speaking, leader of the Benue State delegation, Mr. Terwase Orbunde, commended the NNPC for resolving the recent fuel supply challenges and pledged the readiness of the state government to support the quick take-off of the Ethanol project, adding that the project would generate jobs for Nigerians. Orbunde assured the NNPC of full support and cooperation from the State Government and the host communities, stressing that the State Government fully identifies with the energy policy of the Federal Government. The Benue trough, according to Wikipedia, has its southern limit at the northern boundary of the Niger Delta, where it dips down and is overlaid with Tertiary and more recent sediments. It extends in a northeasterly direction to the Chad Basin, and is about 150 kilometer wide. The trough is arbitrarily divided into lower, middle and upper regions, and the upper region is further divided into the Gongola and Yola arms. The Anambra Basin in the west of the lower region is more recent than the rest of the trough, being formed during a later period of compression, but is considered part of the formation.

New Garage Bariga fire incident caused by electrical surge - LASEMA

A statement released by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency: The Agency received an alert via the CRM at about 6.39 am on a fire incident at 43 Shogbamu Street, New Garage, Bariga, Lagos on Tuesday 16th of August 2016. This promted immediate activation of the Agency's Emergency Response Team, Lagos State Fire Service from Ilupeju and Ikeja Fire Stations, Lagos State Ambulance Service and Nigeria Police Force to the scene. Preminary investigation carried out by the ERT at the scene of the incident revealed that the inferno was caused by an electrical surge from an electronics shop. The timely intervention of the Lagos State Fire Service and other emergency responders curtailed the spread of the inferno to other buildings in the area. There was no loss of life nor injury sustained by anyone. However, 9 rooms were affected at No 43 Shogbamu Street, while one room was affected at No 45 Shogbamu Street Bariga, while 5 shops all at No 43 were burnt with goods and properties worth millions of naira inside the shops. Organizers of Ogbadibo cultural carnival team were hosted on a grand reception at Chida Hotels yesterday at Abuja by Okam forum under the chairmanship of Col Apochi (rtd) Emmanuel o Ameh special adviser (Economic matters) to the Deputy speaker National Assembly Abuja popularly known as Owe Zenith Bank and other great sons and daughters of Orokam were in full support of the idea of curbing social menace in the society and promoting our cultural heritage. The chairman shared that, the prevailing social menaces abounding in societies today such as; kidnapping, Armed Robbery, Cultism etc are alien to the believe , Norms ,and Culture of Ogbadibo people, hence must be communicated to the sundry sons daughters of Ogbadibo . Marginalization of Orokam Community.

Fact has emerged as regards the visit of Ogbadibo Cultural Carnival team lead by my Johson Agada to Okam Forum Abuja on Sunday to secure the endorsement of the proposed Carnival, It was gathered that the meeting ended in a deadlock as the Forum led by its chairman Col Apochi RTD Wasn’t satisfied with elementary arrangement so far. According to an insider who is a member of the forum, said that “ the group discovered from the letter addressed to the forum that the name of Orokam was written in lowercase among the three communities mentioned as host communities, a development that prompted the chairman to reject the letter until the team admitted it was a typographical error, they back up their innocence with another copy of the letter where the name was written in upper case letters. “Another issue that the Forum frowned at was the names of the organizing committee in which none of any Orokam son or daughter made the list as Orokam was completely left out, all the names were from Otukpa and only one person was named from Owukpa community who was absent from the meeting, the group was not however happy with the situation and therefore asked Mr Agada to go back to his drawing board and do the needful. Mr Itodo Favour Austine , an Orokam lagos base activities had in the past raised an alarm over what he described as the marginalization of Orokam Community in the appointment of the organizing committee at the elementary stage of the proposed Ogbadibo Cultural Carnival which is scheduled to take place in December 2016,the Orokam United Forum Secretary General in a statement through Idoma Voice accused Mr Johnson Agada of his discriminatory appointment by not seeing any Orokam son or daughter worthy to be part of the organizing committee, shortly ,Mr Agada Johnson appointed him as the coordinator OCC Lagos State which he posted on the event facebook page, a position Mr Itodo is yet to accept till date as he claimed he is not comfortable with circumstances surrounding the appointment. What the Okam Forum group has done is the confirmation of the allegation raised by the Lagos Based activist last month. If the Ogbadibo Cultural Carnival is worth celebrating, If the Cultural Carnival is for the interest of Ogbadibo, justice must be done to the injustice in the selection of the organizing committee else the good people of Orokam may be tempted to consider the option of opting out of the proposed carnival.
