‘My Wife Was Cheating On Me’ – Man Who Allegedly Beat His Wife to Death Opens Up From His Hiding Place

Culled from Nigeria monitor Lekan Shonde, The man who allegedly killed his wife in the Egbeda, Lagos area, has opened up from his hiding place on what really transpired between them. Lekan, a depot worker in the Apapa area of Lagos State, said his wife of eight years changed after she allegedly started dating the general manager of a publishing company. In a chat with PUNCH, he revealed that his wife, Ronke provoked him by describing vividly how her lover slept with her in a hotel in Abuja. The Abeokuta, Ogun State indigene, said he regretted marrying Ronke, explaining that his late mother had warned him against the union, but he never listened. The marriage, which was blessed with two children, aged six and four, was said to have been marred with domestic violence. The crisis culminated in the death of Ronke on Thursday, after which her husband fled the house and locked up the children with their dead mother. He said the last time he beat his wife was three years ago after a disagreement, saying he had never touched her afterwards. He said, “Since I married my wife eight years ago, she has never bought anything into the house. I gave her N5,000 on Saturdays and N3,000 on Tuesdays for soup. I also gave her money to make her hair. “She was working with GTB as a marketer, but she got sacked three years ago. For that period, I was the one feeding her and taking responsibility for everything in the family. I would wash her pants, bathe the children and buy foodstuffs in the house. She later got a job with a publishing company owned by her uncle. “But my wife changed sometime in March, when she started dating the general manger of a publishing company. My wife was going to the office from Monday to Sunday and she wasn’t going to church again, all because of this man. She called him ‘Eyitemi’ (My own). “Last week Friday, she went to Abuja and came back on Monday. She never told me that the lover was there with her. I learnt later that the lover was there and they slept together in the same room for four days. “When she came back, she didn’t know I was inside the house. She started talking with the man on the phone that she really had fun with him and I didn’t know how to make love. She again said her private parts were paining her.” He said he confronted his late wife and she confirmed that she was dating the other man, adding that she asked her to concentrate on a relationship. Lekan said his wife refused to leave the house despite his insistence on her leaving. Recounting the incident of that night which led to her death, he said they had had an argument over money. He said, “It was around 9pm on Thursday. We had paid our nanny N20,000. Then we needed to pay our children’s teachers N30,000. I discovered she had taken N20,000 and when I asked her to return my money, she said she had spent it. “I was angry because for the past three months, she didn’t allow me to have sex with her. I pushed her hand away from me on the staircase and I left her. She never tumbled or fell. In fact that night, I bought the food that we both ate because she said she didn’t want to cook.

I embarked on the journey of marriage. At the age of 19, I endured like a lion. This fine young man here is an animal. He beat me up and even beat up my younger ones. . . The day he beat me to coma, he was beating my lifeless body before he was stopped and I was rushed to the hospital. Do you know what her mom told me as I gained consciousness? She said (nkiru, lucky will beat you again o, get ready cause the father beat me too ) . . I went back in to coma. He begged and I went back home. This continued until I decided to face reality. But the truth is, do you know why we women endure domestic violence? 1) financial security: I was scared to leave because I did not know how to begin financially . . 2) society: After bragging to my friends, and society see you as a lucky perfect girl you will want to keep it that way. 3) loneliness: You’re scared if u’ll find someone better. I was saying who will marry me again, with my boobs like this, stretch marks, milk was still coming out of my boobs as of then, my big tommy etc, I was insecure, so I stayed . . . Until one day, I woke and took a strong decision to walk away. And when I left empty handed and embarked of this journey. I kept repeating my name, Nkiruka , Nkiruka (my future is bigger ) until I reached my destination. Now I can hit my chest and tell myself I took the right step, even tho I never knew where I was going.”

The Oyo State governor, Abiola Ajimobi, has warned against any proposal to seize or allocate land across Nigeria for use as grazing reserves. Mr. Ajimobi said such plan would be ill-advised and against the spirit of overriding public interest, and would not be allowed in Oyo State. His remarks followed reports of a bill at the National Assembly aimed at creating grazing reserves for nomadic Fulani herdsmen to their feed cattle in all parts of Nigeria. The federal government and some officials had suggested that the creation of reserves would help bring an end to incessant violence between herdsmen and farmers. But the Oyo governor said it would not happen in the south-western state. “This is the time to call a spade a spade,” Mr. Ajimobi said Tuesday at the launch of “AgricOyo”, the Oyo state’s agriculture initiative, held at Paago, Iseyin, in Oke Ogun zone of the state. “Those clamouring for creation of grazing zones across the country should have a rethink. It is against the Land Use Act; it is against the law of natural justice to seize people’s land to cater for someone’s cattle. “Grazing zones could be created for those who are traditional cattle rearers in their areas. I’m not against that. But, you cannot come here and tell me you want to occupy our land for grazing zones. The land exists in our respective states and as such the rightful owners should decide what to do with them. Gov Otom, We need to hear from you ooooooo.
